Morning Focus Sequence

Address foggy morning cognition with a sequence that promotes clarity and mental acuity.

FOGGY MORNING · upon waking · 12 minutes

Why it works

This sequence utilizes interoception and gentle autonomic shifts to transition the nervous system from a resting state to one of active engagement. The focused facial movement and breath patterns stimulate cranial nerves associated with alertness and sensory processing. The subsequent movement and hydration cues facilitate improved cerebral blood flow and neurotransmitter balance, aiding in the dissolution of morning cognitive sluggishness. The overall effect promotes proprioceptive awareness and shifts the perceived internal landscape towards readiness.

  1. Eye Softening + Jaw Release — Begin by lying supine. Gently close your eyes. Without moving the head, allow your gaze to drift slowly from side to side for 60 seconds. Then, consciously relax your jaw, letting the mouth open slightly. Place your fingertips on your masseter muscles and gently massage in small circles for 60 seconds.

  2. Segmental Spine Roll — From supine, bring knees to chest, feet flat on the floor. Inhale, then exhale, slowly tilting your pelvis up and rolling your spine off the floor, one vertebra at a time, until only your shoulder blades remain grounded. Inhale at the top, then slowly exhale, reversing the movement to lower your spine back down. Repeat 3 times.

  3. Sip Water First to Stabilise Glucose — Initiate your day with the recommended hydration practice. This helps prime your metabolism and supports immediate cognitive function. For specifics, refer to Sip Water First to Stabilise Glucose.

  4. Seated Diaphragmatic Breath — Sit upright with a straight spine. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling your abdomen expand. Exhale slowly through pursed lips, feeling your abdomen contract. Focus on extending your exhale. Continue for 5 minutes.
