Regulate Your Rhythm After Travel

This routine addresses post-travel dysregulation, guiding your system back to internal balance and coherence.

post-travel jet-lag dysregulation · upon arrival or before bed · 15 minutes

Why it works

Travel often disrupts circadian rhythms and autonomic nervous system balance. This routine engages mechanisms like the vagal nerve through breathwork and facial release, re-establishes proprioceptive input, and supports neurotransmitter synthesis with targeted nutrition. These actions collectively help to modulate the HPA axis, reducing cortisol and promoting homeostatic recalibration, aiding in re-alignment with local time.

  1. Gentle Spinal Undulation — Stand tall, feet hip-width. Softly bend your knees, then articulate your spine from your tailbone upwards, imagining each vertebra moving independently. Reverse, articulating down. Repeat slowly for 2 minutes, coordinating with soft, even breaths.

  2. Magnesium and Hydration Boost — Consume 200mg magnesium glycinate with a glass of filtered water. Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and nerve function, aiding the body in shifting out of a heightened state. Hydration is key for cellular repair and optimal neurological function.

  3. Jaw and Ear Release — Gently massage your masseter muscles with fingertips for 60 seconds, then lightly pull the top, middle, and bottom of both earlobes for 30 seconds each. This area holds significant tension and is innervated by cranial nerves that influence parasympathetic tone.

  4. Engage Today's Grounding Hack — Refer to 'Feel your feet: sense the ground' for a brief, intentional grounding practice. This reconnects your body to its immediate environment, reducing the sensation of spatial disorientation often associated with travel.

  5. Supine Diaphragmatic Breath — Lie supine with knees bent, feet flat. Place one hand on your chest, one on your abdomen. Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your abdomen to gently rise. Exhale slowly through your nose, feeling your abdomen softly fall. Continue for 5 minutes, focusing on smooth, deep diaphragmatic movement.
