Counteract afternoon shutdown with a brief sequence to restore alertness and engagement.
shutdown / freeze afternoon · mid-afternoon, when energy dips · 12 minutes
Why it works
This sequence targets the orienting reflex and the body's natural alerting systems. By introducing novel sensory input and light movement, we gently stimulate the reticular activating system, responsible for arousal and attention. The vagal nerve is engaged through specific breathing and somatic releases, aiding in shifting from a parasympathetic dominant "freeze" state towards a more balanced, active engagement with the environment. This re-establishes a felt sense of agency and reduces the perception of threat that can contribute to shutdown.
Shoulder Blade Glide — Stand and gently slide your shoulder blades up, back, and down. Focus on the sensation of movement around your spine. Repeat 5-7 times, coordinating with a slow inhale on the rise and exhale on the descent.
Scalene and SCM Release — Lightly place fingertips on your neck, just above the collarbone, to find the scalene and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Gently press and hold for 30 seconds on each side, breathing deeply into the sensation of release.
Mineralized Water Intake — Drink 250ml of water with a pinch of sea salt or a few drops of mineral concentrate. Sip slowly, noticing the taste and the initial sensation of hydration.
Find a Window and Deliberately Expand Your Sight — Engage with today's hack: Find a Window and Deliberately Expand Your Sight. Dedicate your attention to the visual field as instructed.
Supported Neck Rest — Lie supine on a firm surface with a rolled towel or small cushion under your neck, allowing your head to gently release backward. Rest here silently for several minutes, focusing on the support.
