Why it works

The HPA axis, primarily responsible for stress response, becomes overactive with prolonged stimulation. This sequence uses techniques to gently signal safety and reduce sympathetic drive, facilitating a parasympathetic shift. By engaging interoception and direct vagal stimulation through mild facial and body releases, the routine helps to lower heart rate variability, quiet racing thoughts, and prepare the nervous system for restorative sleep.

  1. Gentle spinal flexion — Begin seated on the floor or a firm surface. Slowly round your spine forward, letting your head drop towards your chest. Inhale as you return to neutral. Repeat 5-8 times, focusing on the release in your upper back and neck.

  2. Jaw and temple release — Using your fingertips, gently massage the masseter muscles at your jaw hinge and along your temples. Apply light pressure and move in small circular motions for 1-2 minutes on each side. Notice any softening in the facial muscles.

  3. Warm magnesium drink — Prepare a warm, unsweetened drink with 150-200mg of magnesium glycinate. Sip slowly, noting the warmth in your throat and stomach. This helps signal safety to the digestive system and supports muscle relaxation.

  4. Supported Squat for Pelvic Floor Release — Follow the instructions in Supported Squat for Pelvic Floor Release. This release can further reduce baseline tension.

  5. Restorative breath with legs elevated — Lie on your back with your legs elevated against a wall or resting on cushions. Place one hand on your chest and one on your abdomen. Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four, feeling your abdomen rise. Exhale slowly for a count of six, allowing your abdomen to gently fall. Continue for 3-5 minutes, focusing on the longer exhalation.
