RETURN-TO-TRAINING AFTER INJURY · before or after a light training session · 15 minutes
Why it works
Returning to activity post-injury can elevate sympathetic tone. This sequence downregulates the HPA axis response, shifting the nervous system from a perceived threat state to one of safety and repair. Gentle movement and somatic release encourage fluid lymphatic flow and proprioceptive re-patterning without creating a stress response. Focused breath and mineral intake support tissue recovery and reduce inflammation, preparing the body for progressive loading.
Electrolyte Replenishment — Mix 250ml water with a pinch of sea salt and a squeeze of lemon. Sip slowly for two minutes. This supports cellular hydration and mineral balance, crucial for tissue repair.
Gentle Joint Articulation — Lie supine. Perform slow, controlled ankle circles (5 each direction), knee flexion/extension (5 reps each leg), and hip rotations (5 small circles each direction). Focus on smooth, pain-free range. Move for three minutes.
Scalene and SCM Release — Seated, gently tilt your head to the right, placing your right hand lightly on your head. Look up slightly to stretch the left scalenes. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. This releases neck tension that can impact vagal nerve pathways. Total two minutes.
Chew Mindfully for Gastric Signalling — I find that practicing mindful eating, even with a small portion, profoundly impacts my interoceptive awareness. Try the daily hack: Chew Mindfully for Gastric Signalling after this sequence.
Supported Reclined Breath — Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat, or with legs up a wall. Place one hand on your belly, one on your chest. Inhale slowly for four counts, expanding your belly first. Exhale for six counts. Repeat for three minutes. This downregulates the sympathetic nervous system and facilitates tissue repair.
