Each repetition should take 15-20 seconds to complete, emphasizing slow, controlled movement through the entire active range of motion.
Why it works
Wrist CARs actively move the radiocarpal and midcarpal joints through their maximum achievable range of motion. This process incrementally signals the nervous system to expand and protect that range. Simultaneously, the continuous articular surface loading and unloading promote synovial fluid distribution, nourishing cartilage and reducing degenerative processes. The focused, controlled execution at end-range increases afferent input, improving proprioception and kinesthetic awareness of the wrist complex. This neural drive strengthens the capacity of surrounding musculature to control the joint throughout its full kinematic potential.
How to practice
Setup: Extend one arm straight forward, palm down. Make a soft fist, gently enclosing the thumb, or keep the fingers extended. Ensure the elbow is straight and still. Isolate the movement to the wrist.
Wrist Flexion: Slowly flex the wrist downwards, bringing the knuckles towards the forearm, to your absolute end-range of motion without pain.
Ulnar Deviation: From the fully flexed position, slowly move the hand towards the pinky finger side (ulnar deviation), again to your end-range.
Wrist Extension: Continue the circular motion by slowly extending the wrist upwards, bringing the back of the hand towards the forearm, to your maximum active extension.
Radial Deviation: From the fully extended position, slowly move the hand towards the thumb side (radial deviation), to your end-range.
Connect the Circle: Smoothly transition from radial deviation back to wrist flexion, completing one full circular rotation. The path should be as large and smooth as possible, like drawing the largest circle you can with your knuckles/fingers.
Reverse Direction: Repeat the process in the opposite direction: Start with extension, then ulnar deviation, flexion, radial deviation, and back to extension.
