The Cyclic Sigh (Triple-Cycle)

A triple-cycle sigh to rapidly shift the nervous system towards calm.

Neuroscience-informed breathwork · Stanford University (under Dr. Andrew Huberman) · Acute stress, pre-sleep anxiety, general nervous system dysregulation, emotional overwhelm · Perform one set of three full cyclic sighs as needed. This can be done multiple times daily.

Why it works

The cyclic sigh involves a deep inhale through the nose, followed by a second, shorter inhale to fully inflate the lungs, and then a long, slow exhale through the mouth. This specific pattern maximizes lung expansion and facilitates a robust vagal nerve response. The prolonged exhale, in particular, stimulates mechanoreceptors in the lungs, which signal the brain to downregulate sympathetic activity and upregulate parasympathetic activity. This leads to a rapid reduction in heart rate variability, blood pressure, and cortisol levels, promoting a state of physiological and psychological calm. The triple-cycle repetition amplifies this effect, creating a more profound shift.

How to practice

  1. Find a comfortable seated or reclined position.
  2. Inhale deeply and fully through your nose. Focus on expanding your abdomen and then your chest.
  3. Without exhaling, immediately take a second, shorter sip of air through your nose. This should feel like topping off your lungs, ensuring maximal expansion.
  4. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth, as if sighing out all the air. Aim for an exhale that is longer than your combined inhales.

Repeat this sequence two more times for a total of three full cyclic sighs.
