Loaded Beast with Extension
A dynamic, full-body ground movement that integrates mobility, stability, and strength, derived from Animal Flow.
A dynamic, full-body ground movement that integrates mobility, stability, and strength, derived from Animal Flow.
Animal Flow · Developed by Mike Fitch, founder of Animal Flow, as part of his ground-based movement system. · This movement addresses the need for integrated full-body coordination, dynamic stability, and spinal articulation. It is particularly effective for individuals seeking to enhance their proprioception and mobility across multiple planes of motion. · Perform 3-5 sets of 5-8 slow, controlled repetitions with a focus on spinal articulation and breath synchronization. Rest 60-90 seconds between sets.
Why it works
The Loaded Beast with Extension works by sequentially loading and unloading the kinetic chain. The "load" phase involves a deep hip hinge and spinal flexion, stretching the posterior chain and decompressing the spine. The "unload" or "extension" phase utilizes shoulder and hip extension, alongside thoracic rotation, activating core stabilizers and promoting fluid spinal movement. This dynamic interplay stimulates mechanoreceptors, improving proprioceptive feedback and enhancing nervous system integration of movement patterns. The concurrent activation of agonist and antagonist muscle groups fosters robust joint stability and increases joint range of motion.
How to practice
Starting Position (Beast): Begin on all fours with hands directly under shoulders, fingers spread wide, and knees directly under hips. Lift knees approximately 1-2 inches off the ground, maintaining a neutral spine. Gaze towards the floor directly between your hands.
Load: From the Beast position, press firmly into your hands and feet. Slowly shift your weight backward, allowing your hips to hinge deeply towards your heels. As your hips descend, round your upper back slightly into thoracic flexion. Keep your knees elevated and your core engaged. Your head will naturally drop between your arms. This is the "Loaded Beast" position.
Initiate Extension: From the Loaded Beast, begin to shift your weight forward. As you do, simultaneously extend through your hips and chest, allowing your spine to articulate into extension. Your gaze will shift forward and slightly upward.
Full Extension: Continue the forward and upward movement, arching your back and extending your hips. Your shoulders will externally rotate, and your chest will lift. Imagine reaching your sternum towards the sky. Maintain active engagement through your glutes and core to protect your lumbar spine.
Return to Beast: Reverse the motion, initiating with a controlled spinal flexion and hip hinge to return to the Loaded Beast position, and then gently shift forward to the elevated-knee Beast starting position.
Repetitions: Perform this movement continuously and fluidly.
