Enhance ankle joint health, control, and range of motion through active, circular movements.

Why it works

Ankle CARs actively move the ankle through its full capsule-specific range of motion. This process nourishes the joint cartilage via synovial fluid exchange, trains the nervous system to control new ranges, and strengthens the tissues surrounding the ankle by activating mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors throughout the rotational movement. This consistent, controlled loading of the joint capsule and surrounding soft tissues improves tissue resilience and neurological control, mitigating injury risk and enhancing movement capacity.

How to practice

  1. Starting Position: Sit on the floor with one leg extended and the other bent, foot flat on the floor. Alternatively, you can sit in a chair with the working leg crossed over the other, ensuring the ankle is free to move.

  2. Stabilize: Use your hands to firmly grip the shin of the working leg, just above the ankle. The goal is to isolate movement to the ankle joint and prevent compensation from the knee or hip.

  3. Initiate Movement: Begin by slowly and deliberately pointing your toes (plantarflexion) as far as possible without pain or sacrificing control.

  4. Inversion: From maximal plantarflexion, slowly begin to draw a circular path with your toes, moving them towards the midline of your body (inversion) as far as your active range allows.

  5. Dorsiflexion: Continue the circular path by bringing your toes up towards your shin (dorsiflexion), aiming to achieve the maximum active range.

  6. Eversion: Complete the circle by moving your toes away from the midline of your body (eversion) as far as your active range allows, before returning to the starting plantarflexion position.

  7. Reverse Direction: Once you have completed one full circle in one direction, immediately reverse the movement, performing the same slow, controlled rotation in the opposite direction.

  8. Pace: The entire movement should be slow and controlled, taking approximately 10-15 seconds per full circle, ensuring no momentum is used.
