POST-WORKOUT OVERSTIM · immediately after workout · 15 minutes

Why it works

Intense physical activity activates the sympathetic nervous system, increasing heart rate and muscle tension. This routine utilizes targeted somatic and respiratory techniques to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system via vagal afferents, promoting a felt sense of safety and reducing adrenergic tone. Hydration and specific movements further aid in clearing metabolic byproducts and downregulating excitability. This helps the body transition from a high-arousal state to one conducive to repair.

  1. Immediate electrolyte replenishment — Drink a large glass (16-20 oz) of water with a pinch of sea salt or an electrolyte tab. Sip slowly, noting the taste and temperature.

  2. Gentle fascia release — Lie supine, knees bent, feet flat. Gently rock knees side-to-side, allowing hips to loosen. Continue for 2 minutes, eyes softly gazing upward.

  3. Vagal toning through jaw release — Place fingertips on your masseter muscles. Gently massage in small circles. Open mouth slightly, then release the jaw, allowing lips to part. Breathe deeply, sensing the release.

  4. Salty Pre-Load for Electrolyte Balance — Review the principles for optimal pre-hydration to support your body's response to exertion. Salty Pre-Load for Electrolyte Balance.

  5. Supine thoracic expansion — Lie on your back over a rolled towel placed horizontally under your upper back (just below shoulder blades). Extend arms overhead, palms up. Breathe into your chest for 5 minutes.
