What the label is not telling you
- Consumer sleep-stage estimates are still noisy. Head-to-head validations against polysomnography (de Zambotti 2019, 2023 updates; Chinoy 2020 Sleep) show Oura and Whoop match PSG well for total sleep time and REM (80–90% agreement) but drift 15–25% on deep-sleep minutes and light/wake transitions. The nightly deep-sleep number the dashboard shows is a directional signal, not a measurement. Trend across a month; do not react to a single night.
- HRV on a ring or strap is a relative signal, not an absolute one.
