A dynamic, rotational movement emphasizing spinal articulation and hip mobility within quadrupedal locomotion principles.
Animal Flow · Developed within the Animal Flow system by Mike Fitch. · To improve rotational spinal mobility, hip capsule articulation, and contralateral coordination, counteracting stiffness from prolonged static postures. · Perform 3-5 controlled repetitions per side. Focus on fluid transitions rather than speed. Complete 2-3 sets.
Why it works
The Scorpion Reach mobilizes the thoracic spine and hips through a controlled, dynamic rotation. This action stimulates proprioceptors, enhancing body awareness and intersegmental coordination. The contralateral limb extension and reach promote myofascial lengthening through the lateral line of the body. Neurologically, it integrates cross-body patterns, which can help downregulate a sympathetic nervous system state by introducing fluid, controlled movement complexity.
How to practice
Starting Position (Static Beast): Begin on all fours with hands under shoulders, knees under hips, toes tucked. Lift knees 1-2 inches off the ground, maintaining a flat back.
Initiate Rotation: Press through your left hand and right foot. As you do, lift your right hand and left foot slightly.
Rotate and Reach: Pivot on your left hand and right foot. Simultaneously, extend your left leg straight back and to the right, crossing your midline. As your left leg extends, externally rotate your left hip. Your left foot will land outside your right thigh, with your toes pointed away from your body.
Scorpion Reach: Continue the rotation, lifting your right arm, extending it over your head, and reaching towards the extended left foot. Your gaze follows your reaching hand. Your torso will be open to the ceiling, forming a gentle arc.
Return to Static Beast: Reverse the motion with control, bringing the right hand and left knee back to the starting Static Beast position.
Repeat on the opposite side.
