This specific application, using a low box for single-leg jumps, is a staple in various strength and conditioning programs focused on power and agility, adapting the intensity to minimize impact. · To develop single-leg power, enhance tendon stiffness in the lower limbs, and refine landing mechanics with a reduced impact. · Begin with 3 sets of 3-5 repetitions per leg, with 60-90 seconds rest between sets. Focus on perfect form over quantity. As power and control improve, repetitions can be gradually increased to 5-8 per leg, or box height can be incrementally raised.

Why it works

This movement targets the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) of the muscles, particularly the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, and the Achilles tendon. The rapid eccentric (landing) followed by concentric (take-off) contraction trains the nervous system and musculotendinous unit to store and release elastic energy efficiently. The low box height minimizes ground reaction forces during landing compared to higher box jumps or ground-based plyometrics, reducing stress on joints while still promoting neural adaptations for power. Single-leg execution increases the demand for stability and proprioception, further challenging the nervous system.

How to practice

  1. Setup: Stand facing a low, stable box (e.g., 6-12 inches high) with enough clear space around you. Stand on one leg, with a slight bend in the knee.

  2. Initiation: From the single-leg stance, slightly load the hip and knee of the standing leg, allowing the non-standing leg to move slightly back for counterbalance.

  3. Explode Up: Drive through the ball of the foot and the heel, extending the hip, knee, and ankle to jump vertically and slightly forward onto the box. Aim for a controlled, deliberate trajectory.

  4. Controlled Landing: Land softly and quietly on the same single leg that jumped, mid-foot first, allowing the knee and hip to flex to absorb the impact. Your knee should track over your foot, not collapse inward or outward. Maintain balance.

  5. Step Down: Step down from the box one foot at a time, alternating which foot lands first, to prepare for the next repetition. Avoid jumping backward off the box to reduce cumulative impact.

  6. Repetition: Alternate legs between sets, or perform all repetitions on one leg before switching.
