Pilates Saw

The Pilates Saw is a seated, twisting movement that integrates core stability with spinal mobility and controlled breath. It targets the obliques and deep abdominal muscles, while promoting healthy spinal articulation and releasing tension through the thoracic spine.

Classical Pilates · Joseph Pilates · This movement addresses feelings of stiffness in the torso and a lack of integrated core support for rotational movements. It cultivates a sense of internal stability and fluidity, fostering improved postural awareness and release of tension in the side body and back. · Perform 3-5 repetitions on each side. Focus on quality of movement over quantity. This can be performed daily as part of a spinal mobility routine.

Why it works

The Saw engages multiple systems simultaneously. Rotation of the spine, when properly supported by the deep abdominal musculature, massages internal organs and promotes fascial hydration and extensibility through the connective tissues surrounding the spine and ribs. The coordinated breath (exhale on twist, inhale to return) optimizes intra-abdominal pressure, further stabilizing the lumbar spine and engaging the transversus abdominis. This systematic engagement recalibrates proprioception and motor control, down-regulating sympathetic nervous system activity and facilitating parasympathetic dominance through rhythmic movement and controlled diaphragmatic breathing. The contralateral reach and grounded pelvis create a kinetic chain that elongates the spine, decompressing vertebral segments.

How to practice

  1. Starting Position: Sit tall on your sit bones with your legs extended wide, approximately shoulder-width apart, or slightly wider depending on hamstring flexibility. Your feet are actively flexed, heels anchored, and toes pointing towards the ceiling. Extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder height, palms facing forward. Maintain a tall, elongated spine, drawing your navel gently towards your spine.

  2. Inhale: Inhale deeply, further lengthening your spine and preparing for the movement.

  3. Exhale and Twist: As you exhale, initiate a rotation from your waist, twisting your torso to one side. Simultaneously, reach your opposite hand towards the outside of your ankle or shin of the twisted leg, as if "sawing off" your pinky toe. The other arm extends backward, remaining at shoulder height. Keep your hips stable and rooted equally into the mat.

  4. Inhale and Return: Inhale as you untwist and return your torso and arms to the starting center position, maintaining spinal length.

  5. Exhale and Twist (Other Side): Exhale as you twist to the opposite side, reaching the other hand towards that leg, "sawing off the pinky toe."

  6. Inhale and Return: Inhale as you untwist and return to the center.

  7. Repeat: Continue alternating sides with controlled, flowing movements.
