A foundational Pilates exercise for core engagement and spinal flexion, emphasizing breath and controlled movement to support pelvic floor function.
Classical Pilates (Joseph Pilates) · Developed by Joseph Pilates as part of his original exercise system. · To gently engage the rectus abdominis and obliques, promoting torso stability and intelligent pelvic floor integration through coordinated breath and controlled spinal flexion. · Perform 8-12 repetitions. Focus intently on the quality of movement and breath rather than the height of the lift. Integrate into a core strengthening routine 2-3 times per week.
Why it works
The Chest Lift isolates the superficial abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis) while requiring deep stabilization from the transversus abdominis. Coordinated breathing (exhale on exertion) facilitates intra-abdominal pressure regulation, which reflexively supports pelvic floor activation and integrity. The controlled curl minimizes hip flexor over-recruitment, focusing effort on the trunk. This sustained, eccentric and concentric work builds endurance and control in the anterior core, directly influencing postural support and pelvic stability.
How to practice
Starting Position: Lie supine on a mat, knees bent, feet flat and hip-width apart. Ensure the lumbar spine maintains a neutral curve (a small space between your lower back and the mat). Hands are interlaced behind the head, elbows wide.
Inhale: Prepare by inhaling, allowing the breath to expand the rib cage laterally.
Exhale & Lift: As you exhale, gently draw the navel towards the spine, engaging the deep abdominal muscles. Simultaneously, nod the chin slightly towards the chest and begin to curl the head, neck, and shoulders off the mat. Imagine you are drawing your low ribs towards your pelvis. Maintain space between your chin and chest, as if holding a small peach.
Hold & Inhale: Pause briefly at the top of the lift, maintaining the abdominal engagement. Inhale gently.
Exhale & Lower: As you exhale, control the descent, slowly uncurling the spine back to the mat, vertebra by vertebra. The head is the last to return. Maintain abdominal engagement until the head is fully down.
Repeat: Continue for the prescribed repetitions.
