Why it works

Pectoral release works by directly addressing the fascial restrictions in the pectoralis major and minor muscles. These muscles, when shortened, pull the shoulders forward, restricting the thoracic cage and impeding optimal diaphragm function. Neurologically, releasing these myofascial trigger points reduces nociceptive input to the central nervous system, which can decrease sympathetic nervous system activation. Mechanically, releasing the fascial adhesions allows for greater extensibility of the muscle tissue, facilitating a more open chest cavity and improving the mechanical advantage of the respiratory musculature. This re-establishes a more neutral resting posture and optimizes respiratory mechanics.

How to practice

  1. Positioning: Lie prone on the floor or a firm surface. Place a tennis ball, lacrosse ball, or a specialized myofascial release ball just below your collarbone, on the outer edge of your pectoral muscle.

  2. Locate the point: Slowly roll the ball to identify tender or taut areas. These are fascial restrictions or trigger points. When you find one, pause.

  3. Apply sustained pressure: Allow the weight of your body to create sustained, gentle pressure on the ball. The discomfort level should be a "good pain" – a sensation of release rather than sharp, acute pain.

  4. Introduce movement (optional): Once sustained pressure is applied, you can gently abduct your arm (move it away from your body) and adduct it (move it towards your body) in a small range of motion. This movement helps to shear the fascial layers.

  5. Breathe deeply: As you maintain pressure, focus on slow, deep diaphragmatic breaths. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, feeling your abdomen rise, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. This deep breathing encourages parasympathetic activation and further tissue release.

  6. Duration: Maintain pressure on each point for 60-90 seconds, or until you feel a decrease in tenderness or a sense of tissue softening.
