Why it works
The pectoral muscles, particularly pectoralis minor, can become shortened and taut, pulling the shoulder girdle forward and impinging on nerves and blood vessels in the thoracic outlet. This sustained compression can restrict brachial plexus function and reduce subclavian artery and vein flow. Myofascial release on these tissues aims to restore length to the muscle fibers and fluidity to the fascial layers surrounding them. Mechanically, slow, sustained pressure creates a thixotropic effect within the ground substance of the fascia, temporarily reducing its viscosity and allowing for greater glide between tissue layers. Neurologically, this direct pressure engages Ruffini endings, mechanoreceptors that respond to sustained pressure and shear, leading to a parasympathetic response that reduces local muscle tone and perception of threat.
How to practice
Locate the target area: Stand near a wall. Place a lacrosse ball, tennis ball, or specialized fascial release tool between your upper chest/shoulder and the wall. Position it just below your collarbone and slightly to the side of your sternum, where your arm connects to your torso.
Apply sustained pressure: Lean into the wall, allowing the ball to compress the pectoral tissue. Begin with gentle pressure and gradually increase it as tolerated. Avoid direct pressure on bone or nerve bundles.
Breathe deeply: As you maintain the pressure, take slow, deep breaths. Inhale into your abdomen, feeling your rib cage expand. Exhale fully, allowing your body to soften further into the pressure. Focus on extending the exhale.
Explore motion (optional): If the initial pressure is tolerable, gently move your arm through small ranges of motion, such as raising and lowering it slightly, or sweeping it forward and back. This movement encourages shearing forces within the fascia.
Hold and release: Maintain sustained pressure for 30-90 seconds. You may feel a melting or softening sensation. Slowly roll off the ball.
