Address Sunday-night dread by down-regulating the nervous system for improved transitional calm and sleep.
Sunday-night dread · Sunday evening, 60-90 minutes before bed · 15 minutes
Why it works
Sunday-night dread often stems from an overactive sympathetic nervous system anticipating the week ahead. This routine focuses on activating the parasympathetic nervous system through deliberate somatic actions. Gentle movement and facial release techniques can signal safety to the brain, while intentional rest and mineral intake support GABAergic pathways and reduce neural excitability. This multifaceted approach helps to modulate the HPA axis, promoting a sense of calm and preparing the system for restorative sleep rather than anticipatory stress.
Jaw and Neck Release — Gently massage your masseter muscles and along the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) from behind your ear down to your collarbone. Use slow, consistent pressure, breathing deeply into any areas of tension. Spend 2 minutes per side.
Magnesium Glycinate Sip — Dissolve 150-200mg of magnesium glycinate powder in 4oz of warm water. Sip slowly, noting the warmth and taste. Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and neurotransmitter balance.
Supported Supine Rest — Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor, or with a pillow under your knees. Allow your arms to rest at your sides, palms up. Focus on the sensation of your body heavy against the supporting surface. Notice your breath expanding your abdomen. Continue for 5 minutes.
Carry a Weight, Ground Your System — Engage with the principles of Carry a Weight, Ground Your System. Even without a physical weight, bring awareness to the sensation of gravity grounding your body and the solid support beneath you. Feel your internal weight settling through your body.
Slow, Gentle Twists — From a supported supine position, gently allow your knees to fall to one side, keeping your shoulders on the floor. Take 3-5 slow breaths, then return to center and repeat on the other side. Perform 2-3 cycles on each side.
