Neural Repair After Discord

post-conflict repair · after a stressful interaction · 15 minutes

Why it works

Conflict activates the sympathetic nervous system, leading to elevated cortisol and adrenaline. This routine downregulates that response by stimulating vagal afferents, promoting parasympathetic activation. Slow, controlled movements and focused sensation shift perception from threat to safety, recalibrating the HPA axis and reducing physiological arousal. The facial release directly impacts the trigeminal nerve, further contributing to a sense of calm.

  1. Gentle Spinal Undulations — Stand tall, feet hip-width apart. Begin to gently undulate your spine, initiating the movement from your pelvis and allowing it to ripple up through your vertebrae to your head. Focus on fluidity, not force. Continue for 3 minutes, coordinating with a soft breath.

  2. Scalene and Jaw Release — Seated or standing, gently tilt your head to one side, feeling a stretch in your neck. Use the pads of your fingers to find tension in the scalene muscles along the side of your neck, and apply light, sustained pressure. Then, gently massage your masseter muscles at the hinge of your jaw, opening and closing your mouth slightly. Spend 2 minutes per side for the neck, and 2 minutes total for the jaw.

  3. Massage Your Forehead to Downregulate Stress — Follow the steps outlined in Massage Your Forehead to Downregulate Stress for targeted facial nerve calming.

  4. Mineral-Rich Water Intake — Slowly drink 8-12 ounces of water with a pinch of sea salt or a few drops of trace minerals. Hydration with electrolytes supports cellular function and nervous system balance, aiding in recovery from stress.

  5. Supported Recline — Lie supine on the floor, with your knees bent and feet flat, or with your calves resting over a chair. Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest. Focus on the gentle rise and fall of your breath, allowing your body to soften into the support beneath you. Rest for 5 minutes.
