Evening Tension Release For Restful Sleep

This routine addresses wired-and-tired evenings by downregulating the nervous system for restorative rest.

wired-and-tired evening · any evening before bed · 15 minutes

Why it works

Accumulated facial and body tension can signal residual threat to the nervous system, maintaining an alert state. This sequence systematically releases muscular guarding in the head, neck, and upper body. Gentle movement and specific somatic cues reduce afferent signaling of tension, allowing the parasympathetic system to dominant. Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and neurotransmitter balance, further encouraging a shift from sympathetic arousal to a restorative state conducive to sleep.

  1. Jaw and Scalene Release — Gently massage your masseter muscles with your fingertips in small circles for 60 seconds. Then, use three fingers to trace down the side of your neck along the scalenes, applying light pressure, for 60 seconds per side. Breathe slowly through your nose.

  2. Soothe Facial Tension With Micro-Taps — Follow the micro-tapping guide at Soothe Facial Tension With Micro-Taps. Observe the subtle shifts in sensation around your eyes and temples.

  3. Magnesium Glycinate Intake — Take your dose of magnesium glycinate with a small amount of warm water. Notice the warmth as you swallow, allowing a physiological signal of safety.

  4. Supine Stillness with Gentle Rock — Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat. Place your hands on your lower abdomen. Allow your knees to gently rock side-to-side, small movements, for 5 minutes. Focus on the breath in your belly.

  5. Shoulder and Neck Rolls — While seated or standing, gently roll your shoulders backward in slow, controlled circles for 60 seconds. Then, slowly drop your right ear toward your right shoulder for 30 seconds, then left ear to left shoulder for 30 seconds. Coordinate with exhales.
