FOGGY MORNING · within the first 30 minutes of waking · 12 minutes
Why it works
Morning fogginess often correlates with mild dehydration, low blood sugar, and residual sleep inertia. This routine aims to gently stimulate the orienting reflex, promoting alertness by engaging the nervous system with novel, yet gentle, sensory input. Hydration and a small protein intake stabilize blood glucose. Rib cage mobility improves respiratory mechanics, increasing oxygen delivery to the brain and further reducing static. The breath work regulates the autonomic balance, preparing the system for sustained attention. Professor Matthew Walker's work on sleep inertia describes this initial period of reduced performance.
Hydrate and Stabilize — Drink 250ml of cool water with a pinch of sea salt. Follow with 10g of protein, like a few nuts or a spoonful of plain yogurt, to stabilize blood sugar. Do this before consuming any caffeine.
Orbital Release — Sitting comfortably, gently place fingertips on the bony orbital ridge around your eyes. Apply very light pressure and make tiny circles, exploring any points of tension. Breathe slowly, softening the gaze for 60 seconds. Then, very gently massage temples and jaw.
Rib Cage Mobility for Broadened Internal State — Engage with today's specific mobility practice to broaden your internal state and support optimal breathing mechanics: Rib Cage Mobility for Broadened Internal State. This prepares your system for deeper respiratory patterns.
Focused Nasal Breathing — Lie supine or sit upright with a neutral spine. Close your eyes. Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of 4, pause briefly, then exhale slowly through the nose for a count of 6. Notice the subtle shift in your internal state. Repeat for 2 minutes.
