Split Jump
Enhance lower body power and tendon stiffness with a controlled, alternating leg jump.
Enhance lower body power and tendon stiffness with a controlled, alternating leg jump.
Plyometrics (specifically, foundational plyometric drills) · Developed within athletic conditioning as a foundational plyometric exercise. · To improve reactive strength, power output, and tendon resilience in the lower limbs. · 2-4 sets of 6-10 repetitions per leg. Focus on quality landings over quantity. Rest 60-90 seconds between sets.
Why it works
The Split Jump utilizes the stretch-shortening cycle, which involves a rapid eccentric (lengthening) contraction immediately followed by a powerful concentric (shortening) contraction. This mechanism trains the muscles and tendons to store and release elastic energy efficiently, leading to increased power and improved tendon stiffness. The dynamic, controlled landing also refines proprioception and neuromuscular coordination, contributing to injury prevention and enhanced athletic performance. The controlled impact stimulates mechanoreceptors in tendons, signaling adaptations that increase collagen cross-linking and overall tensile strength.
How to practice
Starting Position: Stand with feet hip-width apart. Shift one foot back into a staggered stance, maintaining balance. The front knee should be bent slightly, and the back heel lifted.
Lowering: Initiate the movement by gently bending both knees, loading the legs. Do not go into a deep lunge; this is a preparatory loading phase, not a deep squat.
Explode Up: From this loaded position, explosively push off the ground with both feet, switching the position of your legs in mid-air. The front leg becomes the back leg, and vice-versa.
Controlled Landing: Land softly with the opposite leg forward, absorbing the impact by bending the knees and hips. Aim for a quiet, controlled landing, distributing the force evenly. Avoid locking out the knees.
Repeat: Immediately transition into the next jump, maintaining a fluid rhythm.
