Addresses stiffness, coordination, and cyclical power output. · Perform 3-5 sets of 10-20 meters. Focus on quality over quantity. Rest for 60-90 seconds between sets to allow for adequate recovery and maintain technical precision. Integrate into a warm-up or as a specific drill within a training session 2-3 times per week on non-consecutive days.

Why it works

The A-skip leverages the stretch-shortening cycle. As the foot lands, the tendons (particularly Achilles and patellar) are rapidly stretched, storing elastic energy. The subsequent quick push-off utilizes this stored energy, increasing power output and improving the stiffness and resilience of the tendons over time. This cyclical loading pattern, when performed with precision, also refines neuromuscular coordination, optimizing the timing and recruitment of muscle fibers for efficient movement and injury prevention. The low ground contact time promotes rapid force absorption and production, crucial for explosive movements.

How to practice

  1. Starting Position: Stand tall with feet hip-width apart. Maintain an upright posture, eyes forward, and shoulders relaxed.

  2. Initiate Movement: Begin by marching in place. As you become rhythmic, introduce a slight hop off the standing leg with each step.

  3. Lead Leg Drive: Drive one knee aggressively upward towards your chest, ensuring the thigh is parallel to the ground or slightly higher. Simultaneously, the opposite arm pumps forward.

  4. Active Foot Plant: As the lead leg reaches its apex, quickly snap the foot down towards the ground, landing actively on the ball of the foot directly beneath your hip. The foot should actively claw into the ground.

  5. Opposite Leg: As the lead foot makes contact, immediately drive the other knee up, replicating the motion. The motion is continuous and cyclical.

  6. Maintain Rhythm: Focus on a quick, light touch on the ground, minimizing ground contact time. The movement should feel bouncy and rhythmic, not heavy or laborious.

  7. Arm Action: Maintain a crisp and coordinated arm swing, with elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees, moving in opposition to the legs (left leg up, right arm forward).
