Pilates Side Bend Prep

A foundational Pilates movement to articulate the spine laterally, integrating obliques and intercostals with breath.

Classical Pilates · Joseph Pilates, Return to Life Through Contrology · To improve spinal mobility, cultivate lateral abdominal strength, and enhance breath capacity. · Perform 5-8 repetitions on each side, focusing on controlled, articulate movement.

Why it works

The Side Bend Prep mobilizes the thoracic and lumbar spine in the coronal plane. This action engages the oblique musculature synergistically with the intercostal muscles, promoting fascial glide and increasing rib cage expansion. The controlled eccentric and concentric contractions of the lateral trunk muscles, coordinated with respiration, enhance neuromuscular efficiency and improve segmental control, which directly influences pelvic floor integration by improving core canister pressure regulation.

How to practice

  1. Starting Position: Sit upright with legs extended straight forward and together. Place your left hand on the floor beside your left hip, fingers pointing away from you. Bring your right hand behind your head, elbow pointing out to the side.

  2. Inhale: Prepare by lengthening through your spine.

  3. Exhale: Initiate a lateral flexion of your torso to the left, pressing down into your left hand. Feel the right side of your waist shorten and the left side lengthen. Maintain connection through your sit bones.

  4. Inhale: Slowly return to the starting upright position, articulating through each segment of your spine.

  5. Repeat on the right side.
