Coherent Breathing
A precise breath rhythm to optimize vagal tone and heart rate variability.

Integrative Breathwork (Stephen Elliott, Dr. Richard Brown, Dr. Patricia Gerbarg) · Developed by Stephen Elliott, elucidated by medical professionals like Dr. Richard Brown and Dr. Patricia Gerbarg. · To mitigate chronic stress, improve emotional regulation, and enhance physiological resilience by optimizing the autonomic nervous system. · Practice for 5-10 minutes initially, gradually increasing to 20 minutes, 1-3 times per day. The key is consistent application.
Why it works
Coherent Breathing, specifically at a rate of 5-6 breaths per minute, synchronizes cardiac and respiratory rhythms. This resonance enhances vagal tone, a key indicator of parasympathetic activity, and maximizes Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The consistent, gentle pressure changes within the thoracic cavity during this rhythm also contribute to improved lymphatic flow and gas exchange efficiency.
How to practice
Posture: Sit comfortably with an upright, unsupported spine, or lie supine. Ensure the abdomen can move freely.
Initiation: Inhale smoothly and silently through the nose for a count of 5 seconds, allowing the abdomen to gently expand.
Exhalation: Exhale smoothly and silently through the nose for a count of 5 seconds, allowing the abdomen to gently contract inward.
Continuity: Maintain this consistent, unforced rhythm. The breath should feel effortless, like a gentle wave.
