Why it works
Eccentric contractions, where the muscle lengthens under tension, are crucial for tendon and fascial health. The high forces experienced during the lowering phase in the Nordic hamstring exercise stimulate collagen synthesis and cross-linking within the tendons, improving their stiffness and capacity to absorb and release energy. This mechanotransduction signaling strengthens the tissue's structural integrity. Neurologically, this controlled eccentric stress enhances proprioceptive feedback and neuromuscular coordination, allowing the nervous system to better manage rapid lengthening of the hamstrings. This adaptation reduces the protective reflex response to stretch, leading to improved force dissipation and injury prevention. The slow, controlled tempo also allows for increased time under tension, promoting localized muscular endurance and strength adaptations.
How to practice
Secure your ankles: Find a partner to hold your lower legs firmly at the ankles, or use a secure anchor point. Kneel on a padded surface with your body erect, hips extended, and a neutral spine.
Initiate the lower: Maintain a rigid torso. Slowly begin to lean forward, resisting the descent using only your hamstrings. The movement should primarily occur at the knees, not the hips.
Control the eccentric: Aim for a 4-second count as you control your body's lowering towards the floor. Focus on maintaining tension and resisting gravity throughout the entire range of motion.
Hand assist (if needed): When your hamstrings can no longer control the descent, allow your hands to softly break your fall, pushing off the floor to help return to the start position.
Return to start: Lightly push back up to the starting kneeling position. The concentric (lifting) phase can be quicker or assisted. The primary focus is the slow, controlled eccentric lowering.
Gaze: Maintain a soft, forward gaze to keep the neck neutral.
