Animal Flow · The Crab Reach is a signature movement within the Animal Flow system, developed by Mike Fitch. This system emphasizes ground-based, bodyweight movements that blend elements of gymnastics, breakdancing, and parkour. · This movement addresses the need for integrated full-body mobility and stability, particularly in the spine, shoulders, and hips. It's beneficial for individuals seeking to improve coordination, alleviate movement restrictions, and enhance proprioception. · Perform 3-5 repetitions per side for 2-3 sets. Focus on slow, controlled movement through the full range of motion. Rest 30-60 seconds between sets.

Why it works

The Crab Reach mobilizes the thoracic spine, promoting extension and rotation, which counters the effects of prolonged sitting. It simultaneously loads and strengthens the shoulders in an open chain, weight-bearing position, improving stability. The hip extension component activates gluteal muscles and opens the hip flexors. The contralateral reach across the body integrates the fascial lines, fostering total-body communication and nervous system recalibration through novel movement patterns.

How to practice

Starting Position: Crab

  1. Sit on the ground with knees bent, feet flat, hip-width apart. Place hands behind you, fingers pointing away from your body, approximately 6-12 inches beyond your hips.
  2. Press into your hands and feet to lift your hips into a "Crab" position, keeping your core engaged and hips high, forming a straight line from knees to shoulders.

The Reach

  1. From the Crab position, shift your weight onto your left hand and right foot.
  2. As you shift, begin to lift your right hand and left foot simultaneously.
  3. Initiate the reach by extending your right arm up and over your head, towards the floor behind you. Your gaze should follow your reaching hand.
  4. Concurrently, drive your left knee towards your chest, maintaining balance on your supporting limbs.
  5. Allow your torso to rotate naturally, creating a broad arc with your reaching arm and an opposing pull with your contralateral knee.
  6. Return to the Crab position with control, reversing the movement.
  7. Repeat on the other side, shifting weight to the right hand and left foot, reaching with the left hand, and driving the right knee.
