The Kidney Shield Protocol

Build with protein. Protect the filter. Don't let purines win.

Target state: Uric Acid & Renal Filtration Load

Symptoms addressed: Joint ache or stiffness, morning puffiness, dark concentrated urine, gout flare history, elevated uric acid or creatinine, fatigue on high-protein phases

Fasting: Modest only — never restrict fluid or protein simultaneously

Supplement pillars

  • I. Hydration & Renal Flush Floor: 3.0L minimum daily fluid — non-negotiable on high-protein days, Electrolyte sachet (LMNT — sodium/potassium/glucose ratio) to drive fluid into the bloodstream, Fluid spread evenly across the day — not front- or back-loaded, Reduce processed sodium — competes with electrolyte-driven hydration efficiency
  • II. Citrate Alkalisation Stack: Warm lemon water on waking — the day's first alkalising input, Potassium citrate (or equivalent organic citrate ampoule) with breakfast, Citrus + leafy greens + alkalising vegetables through the day, Urinary pH strips periodically — target mildly alkaline, not neutral or acidic
  • III. Purine-Conscious Protein Selection: Backbone proteins: chicken breast, turkey mince, lean white fish (cod, sea bass, sole), lean beef sirloin, Excluded entirely: shellfish, organ meats, pork, high-purine game, Distribute protein across 3–4 meals, not one purine-dense hit, Pair every high-protein meal with alkalising vegetables
  • IV. Oxidative & Renal Defence: Molecular hydrogen tablet or hydrogen-rich water daily, Antioxidant-dense foods — berries, leafy greens, olive oil, Adequate sleep — renal repair and filtration decline under sleep debt, Periodic renal panel (uric acid, creatinine, eGFR) on extended high-protein phases

Daily timing

TimeItems
On wakingWarm lemon water before coffee or food
7:00 AMCitrate ampoule + first electrolyte sachet + protein-dense breakfast (backbone list)
MiddaySecond electrolyte sachet if training/heat · protein + vegetable-heavy lunch · fluid ~50% of 3L target by now
AfternoonMolecular hydrogen tablet · steady fluid rather than late catch-up
EveningFinal backbone-protein meal — avoid stacking the largest hit at the very last meal
Before bedConfirm 3.0L hit · small top-up if short, no overload

Devices

  • Marked bottle or hydration app: The 3.0L floor is only useful if visible — removes guesswork
  • Urinary pH test strips: Confirm alkalisation is landing — target mildly alkaline
  • Oura Gen 4 / WHOOP 5.0: Renal & inflammatory load show in HRV and recovery before labs
  • Home renal panel (periodic): Uric acid, creatinine, eGFR — stay ahead of the signal

Rules

  • Protect the filter while you feed the muscle — the floor comes first, the protein target only becomes safe once it's in place
  • Fluid 3.0L minimum daily, higher on training or high-heat days
  • Never restrict fluid and protein simultaneously — this anchor is not built for aggressive fasting
  • Pre-existing kidney disease, reduced eGFR, kidney stones or gout: run only under medical supervision
  • Potassium citrate is contraindicated in hyperkalaemia or on potassium-sparing meds — check with a physician
  • Dark, infrequent urine or big-toe/ankle/knee joint ache = pull purines, push fluid and citrate immediately
