Abstract illustration of a vertebral column interwoven with a bone-density honeycomb lattice

The 71-year-old who reversed her T-score with twelve minutes a day

    Retired headteacher, 71 (Western Europe)

A T-score of −2.7, a prescription for alendronate she did not want to take, and a quiet, growing fear of stairs. Eighteen months of a daily 12-minute polyvagal-informed yoga sequence — alongside, not instead of, her medical team — moved her spinal density into the osteopenic range and her femoral neck out of fracture risk.

    Context

Diagnosed at 69 after a routine DEXA. Cabinet of supplements, two falls-prevention classes, an unused balance ball. She had stopped gardening, stopped taking the bus when it was raining, and had begun planning her days around the avoidance of stairs. Her GP — kindly, briskly — had told her to be careful. The instruction was making her smaller every month.

    The pattern

Bone is a responsive tissue, not a protected one. It densifies in the directions you load it, in the rhythms a regulated nervous system can sustain. Her supplement stack was supplying the raw materials. Nothing in her week was supplying the load signal — and her chronic, low-grade vigilance was keeping cortisol elevated enough to suppress osteoblast activity. She needed a daily, weighted, breathed-through yes to her skeleton, not a calmer warning.

    What we did

    • •Daily 12-minute Fishman yoga sequence — twelve poses, 20–30s holds, never skipped, including the 5-minute savasana
    • •Polyvagal layer added to every pose: orienting practice, long exhale, soft jaw, deliberate weight commitment to the floor
    • •Coordinated with her GP and rheumatologist — alendronate started at month three, after baseline practice was established, on a lower-dose schedule than originally proposed
    • •Bright morning light within 30 minutes of waking, to lower the cortisol baseline that had been quietly demineralising her spine
    • •Strength micro-dose: two sets of weighted carries, three days a week, integrated into her walk to the bakery
    • •Quarterly DEXA, HRV and morning cortisol reviewed together — autonomic recovery preceded density recovery by about six months

"Nobody had asked my skeleton a question in twenty years. Twelve minutes a day, every day, was the question. The bone answered. So did the rest of me — I went from planning my week around stairs to forgetting they were there."
