Functional beverages — new launch review

Unwind — the magnesium L-threonate relaxation drink from the Nowadays founders, now in 1,000 Walmarts

The team that scaled THC drink Nowadays to $100M launched Unwind in October 2026: magnesium L-threonate plus L-theanine in a $2.79 can — reviewed on whether the doses match the promise

Unwind is the new functional relaxation beverage from Justin Tidwell and Anthony Puterman, the founders who built THC beverage brand Nowadays past $100 million in sales. Launched October 2026 into roughly 1,000 Walmart stores and TikTok Shop, each 12oz can pairs magnesium L-threonate (as Magtein®) with L-theanine, zero caffeine, low sugar, at $2.79 a can. The ingredient choices are smarter than most of the relaxation-drink shelf — L-threonate is the magnesium form with actual brain-availability data, and theanine is one of the best-evidenced calm-focus compounds there is. The questions are dose and expectation: a canned drink is a daily ritual, not a clinical intervention.

Unwind — the magnesium L-threonate relaxation drink from the Nowadays founders, now in 1,000 Walmarts

What it claims

  • 'Take the edge off, slow down and shift gears' — functional relaxation for everyday life
  • Magnesium L-threonate (Magtein®) plus L-theanine to 'support a calm state of mind'
  • Zero caffeine, low sugar, low calorie
  • Five flavours, $2.79/can, mass-market Walmart distribution

What the label is not telling you

  • Magnesium L-threonate is the right magnesium — and the dose question is everything. Magtein® is the one magnesium form with human data showing it raises brain magnesium levels (Slutsky 2010, Neuron, was the animal foundation; Liu 2016 and later human trials followed). The studied doses run around 1.5–2g of Magtein per day. If a can carries a token 50–100mg for label appeal, you are buying flavoured water with a good story. The brand does not lead with the milligrams, which tells you to ask.
  • L-theanine is legitimately one of the best calm ingredients available. 200mg is the classic studied dose for alpha-wave promotion and reduced stress response (Hidese 2019 and the broader trial literature). It is cheap, safe, and works within the hour. If Unwind's theanine dose is anywhere near 200mg, that ingredient alone justifies the 'calm' claim better than most of the category.
  • The founders' track record is a distribution story, not a formulation story. Scaling Nowadays to $100M proves they can build a beverage brand and read a consumer shift — relaxation as the post-energy-drink need is a sharp read. It says nothing about whether the formula is dosed to do anything.
  • 'Zero caffeine, low sugar' is the quiet win. Most of the functional beverage shelf is caffeinated, sweetened, or both. A genuinely stimulant-free, low-sugar can at $2.79 is a better default evening drink than most of what it sits next to at Walmart — even if the actives are modest.

Effect on the nervous system

The two actives aim at real targets. L-theanine increases alpha-band brain activity and modulates glutamate — the subjective readout is calm-without-sedation, which is exactly the 'turn down the noise' positioning. Magnesium is a cofactor in hundreds of reactions including GABA signalling and HPA-axis regulation, and marginal magnesium status is common; the L-threonate form is the interesting one because it is the only form with evidence of raising brain magnesium specifically. The honest framing: this is a gentle, sub-clinical nudge toward parasympathetic tone, delivered inside a ritual — and the ritual (cold can, end of day, deliberate pause) is doing a meaningful share of the work. That is not a criticism. Rituals are how nervous systems actually learn.

Who it might suit

People replacing an evening beer, wine or THC drink who want the ritual without the substance. Anyone who already buys functional drinks and wants the smartest option on the mass-market shelf. People who respond to 'a thing I do at 6pm' more than to 'a practice I keep meaning to start'.

Who should skip it

Anyone expecting a measurable anxiolytic effect from a $2.79 can. People on magnesium-sensitive medications or with kidney disease should mind total magnesium intake. And anyone whose evenings need structural change — earlier screens-off, a real wind-down — rather than a better beverage.

Bottom line

The smartest-formulated relaxation drink in mass retail, pending the dose on the label. Score 6/10: right ingredients, right price, right ritual framing, unknown doses. Check the milligrams — 200mg theanine and a meaningful Magtein dose would push this to a 7. As an alcohol or THC swap it is an easy win. For the wind-down it should accompany, the routines library has the free version, and the Nervous System Journal will tell you if your evenings are actually improving.
