The €4,000 skincare year that didn't work — until we treated her nervous system

    Brand director, mid-30s (Western Europe)

Adult acne, premenstrual jawline flares, hair shedding, dull skin, persistent under-eye darkness. Two dermatologists, three facialists, one functional medicine workup, €4,000+ in product and treatments across 14 months — barely a 10% improvement. We never touched her routine. We treated the nervous system underneath it. By week 8 her dermatologist stopped her topical antibiotic; by month 4 her hair regrowth was visible at the hairline.

    Context

Brand director, mid-30s, on the partner track. Skin had been flaring for 14 months — jawline acne that worsened the week before her period, persistent perioral redness, sudden hair shedding she first noticed in the shower drain in October. She'd done everything the internet recommends: a board-certified derm, a functional medicine workup, gut testing, hormone panel, an elimination diet, three different retinoids, two oral antibiotics, microneedling, LED, a €280 silk pillowcase. Total spend across 14 months: more than €4,000. Improvement: maybe 10%. The flare always came back, always within 48 hours of a stressful work week.

    The pattern

Nothing in her workup was 'wrong' on paper. Hormones were borderline. Gut markers were unremarkable. Skin biopsy was clean. What nobody had measured was her nervous system. Her HRV was 22ms. Her morning cortisol curve was inverted. She was sleeping 5.5 fragmented hours. She'd been in low-grade sympathetic activation for two and a half years. The skin was not the problem. The skin was the readout. Stacking more product on top of an unregulated nervous system was inflaming the very system the products were trying to calm — every retinoid, every acid, every fasting window was being received by her body as one more stressor.

    What we did

    • •Reset protocol (7 days) before any change to skincare — to establish a baseline and break the sympathetic loop
    • •Sleep architecture rebuild: hard 10:30pm wind-down, blackout, no phone after 10pm, pre-sleep physiological sigh sequence
    • •Morning cortisol protocol: 30 minutes phone-free, 10 minutes outdoor light, 5 minutes nasal breathing — done before any work email
    • •Skincare audit: paused 4 of 7 active products that were adding inflammatory load (retinoid + two acids + a brightening serum). Kept barrier basics only.
    • •Nutrition recalibration: stopped the 16:8 fast (she was under-eating during high-stress weeks), added a real breakfast with protein and fat, stabilised blood sugar through the cortisol-sensitive afternoon window
    • •Movement re-tuning: replaced 5x/week HIIT with 2x strength + 3x walks + 1x mobility — reduced sympathetic load without reducing fitness
    • •Coordinated with her dermatologist to taper oral antibiotic by week 8 once the inflammatory baseline had dropped

"I spent more than €4,000 in a year trying to fix my face from the outside. Eight weeks into this work — without buying a single new product — my dermatologist looked at my skin and said, 'whatever you're doing, keep doing it.' I wasn't doing anything to my skin. I was finally doing something for my nervous system. The face was just the part of me that had been telling the truth all along."
