Returning to the start line after a year of overtraining collapse

    Sponsored ultra-trail runner, mid-30s — Southern Europe

A sponsored ultra-runner stalled for ten months after a podium finish — three sports physicians, no progress. Performance L2 plus parasympathetic priming returned him to threshold work in seven weeks.

    Context

After a podium finish at a major European ultra, he spent ten months unable to train above zone 2 without his HR spiking and his sleep collapsing. Three sports physicians told him it was overtraining and to rest. He had rested. It wasn't working.

    The pattern

The autonomic system had locked into a sympathetic-dominant pattern that didn't respond to load reduction alone. He needed an active reset — not more rest.

    What we did

    • •Performance L2 protocol layered on top of his coach's training plan
    • •Pre-session parasympathetic priming (4 min) before every run
    • •Cold + breath protocol post-session to accelerate vagal rebound
    • •Quarterly bloodwork + HRV review with his medical team

    Outcomes

Time to return to threshold work

    10mo stalled → 7 weeks

    Resting HR

    64 → 42 bpm

    HRV (90-day avg)

    31ms → 89ms

    Result

    Top-5 finish, 100km ultra (2025)

"Every coach told me to rest more. Resting wasn't the problem — recovering was. I had no idea those were two different things until I learned the protocol."
