Why it works
Early morning anxiety often stems from an overactive sympathetic nervous system, anticipating the day's demands. This routine engages the vagus nerve through gentle movement and breath, signaling safety to the brainstem. The focus on interoception – sensing internal states – helps differentiate perceived threats from actual physiological sensations. By grounding the body and providing specific sensory input, you modulate the HPA axis response, shifting from a stress-driven state to one of calm coherence. This practice builds capacity for self-regulation.
Hydration with Electrolytes — Drink 8-12 oz of water with a pinch of sea salt or a small amount of electrolyte powder. Focus on the cool sensation as it moves down your throat.
Eye Softening and Vagal Gaze — Sit or lie down. Soften your gaze, allowing your eyes to rest without focusing on anything specific. Gently move your eyes to the far right, hold for 30 seconds. Bring them back to center, then move to the far left, hold for 30 seconds. Repeat once. This can activate vagal afferents.
Gentle Spinal Undulation — From a seated or standing position, gently articulate your spine. Think of it as a wave from your tailbone to the crown of your head, easing stiffness and encouraging subtle fluid movement. No need for force, just flow for 2 minutes.
Morning Sunlight on Skin for Circadian Alignment — Go outside or near a window. Expose your eyes (without glasses/contacts if possible) and skin to natural morning light for 5-10 minutes. This supports your natural circadian rhythm. Find more on this practice here: Morning Sunlight on Skin for Circadian Alignment.
Diaphragmatic Breath Pause — Find a comfortable seated position. Place one hand on your chest, one on your abdomen. Breathe in gently, feeling your abdomen rise. Exhale slowly, allowing your abdomen to fall. Focus on a smooth, extended exhale. Do this for 2 minutes.
