Easy Zone 2 Walk for Low-Ferritin Days
When ferritin is low, hard training taxes you twice. Walk instead.
When ferritin is low, hard training taxes you twice. Walk instead.
zone 2 walking · Endurance physiology (Peeling et al.) · When you feel flat, breathless on stairs, or your training has stalled while bloods show low ferritin. · 20–30 minutes, conversational pace
Why it works
Hard or long sessions raise IL-6, which lifts hepcidin for roughly 3–6 hours afterwards and cuts iron absorption from the next meal (Peeling et al., 2014). A conversational walk keeps you moving without that spike, so your iron-rich meal lands in a calmer window.
How to practice
- Walk at a pace where you can speak in full sentences — nasal breathing if you can.
- Keep it 20–30 minutes, flat or gentle hills.
- Finish, sip water, and eat your iron-rich meal within the next hour or two.
- Save intense intervals for days you feel resourced, and eat iron away from the hours straight after them.
