Designing a leadership wellness conference for one of the world's most respected academic medical systems

Globally recognised teaching hospital and university (South Asia & East Africa)

A one-day leadership conference and 12-month wellness architecture designed as Step 1 of a 5-year programme — turning what's known about academic medical burnout into measurable pathways for clinical outcomes, teaching quality and leadership resilience.

    Context

Academic medical centres globally report 40–60% physician burnout, 30–45% of staff with metabolic syndrome markers, and sleep disruption in over 70% of shift workers — yet mental-health screening uptake stays below 20%. The institution wanted a wellness initiative that didn't add another programme on top of an already-stretched system, but redesigned how their people work, recover and perform.

    The pattern

Universal wellness policies fail in academic medicine because the workforce isn't interchangeable: surgeons, educators, nurses, researchers and administrators carry very different physiological loads. The brief was to honour that diversity while producing one coherent institutional standard — and to leave the day with signed pilots, not slide decks.

    What we did

    • •Architected a one-day conference around three through-lines: nervous-system performance, metabolic stability, and relational/family health
    • •Designed a pre-conference anonymous pulse + day-of voluntary metabolic snapshots to generate the institution's first system-wide wellness dataset
    • •Built four panels (Nervous System Under Pressure · Archetypes & Flexible Futures · Metabolic Stability · Relational Health) plus three rotating experiential labs
    • •Curated a lunchtime 'Wellness Lab' of 10 interactive activations — hydration, sound bath, fascia reset, CGM data, meditation, lymphatic flow
    • •Closed the day with a facilitated vote on 3 pilots and recruitment for a 12-month leadership wellness cohort with defined metrics
    • •Drafted the 'Wellness Standards for Academic Medical Systems in the Global South' framework for board review

"The shift was treating wellness as an operating system, not a programme. We left the day with a dataset, a cohort, three pilots and a standards draft — before the emotional high faded."
