Regulate Your Baseline After Relational Static
Re-establish a regulated baseline after conflict to restore emotional and physiological coherence.
Re-establish a regulated baseline after conflict to restore emotional and physiological coherence.
post-conflict repair · immediately after or some hours after a difficult interaction · 14 minutes
Why it works
Conflict elevates cortisol and adrenaline, disrupting your baseline and engaging the sympathetic nervous system. This routine uses gentle movement, specific nutrient intake, and targeted somatic practices to downregulate this stress response. By stimulating vagal afferents and promoting diaphragmatic breathing, it helps to restore parasympathetic tone, reducing inflammation and supporting emotional integration. The sequence promotes a return to physiological equilibrium, allowing for clearer processing of the interaction without lingering hyperarousal.
Gentle Trunk Rotation — Sit comfortably with feet flat. Gently rotate your torso left and right, allowing your head to follow. Keep the movement small, within your natural range. Breathe smoothly as you twist, for two minutes.
Electrolyte Water — Drink 250ml of water with a pinch of sea salt or a small electrolyte tablet. Hydration with minerals supports cellular function and nerve signaling, which can be depleted during stress. Sip slowly.
Scalene and Jaw Release — Gently massage the muscles on the sides of your neck (scalenes) and your jaw (masseters). Use light pressure, feeling for tender spots. Breathe into the sensation for two minutes. Release tension often held in these areas during stress.
Press Palms, Reset State — Engage with today's daily hack: Press Palms, Reset State. Follow the instructions for two minutes, focusing on the sensory input.
Supported Recline — Lie on your back with a pillow under your knees, or in Legs-Up-The-Wall if comfortable. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Breathe deeply, focusing on slow exhales for five minutes. This posture supports vagal tone and helps to settle the nervous system.
