Reset your nervous system after demanding meetings to regain focus and calm.
POST-MEETING RESET · immediately after a demanding meeting · 10 minutes
Why it works
Meetings can leave the nervous system in a state of heightened arousal, impacting cognitive function and emotional regulation. This sequence employs targeted somatic releases to address built-up tension in the head, neck, and jaw, which are common areas for stress manifestation. The specific movements and sensory input downregulate sympathetic activation, promoting parasympathetic tone. The mindful hydration and restorative posture further support neural integration and re-establish a sense of internal equilibrium, preparing you for subsequent tasks or transitions without residual activation.
Masseter Release — Place fingertips on your masseter muscles (jaw, just below your cheekbones). Gently apply pressure and make small, slow circles for 60 seconds, then allow your jaw to soften. Repeat on both sides.
Neck and Shoulder Mobilization — Slowly roll your head from shoulder to shoulder, allowing your chin to drop towards your chest. Repeat 3-5 times in each direction. Finish by gently shrugging your shoulders up to your ears, holding for 5 seconds, then releasing with an audible sigh.
Hydrate and Regulate — Take 3-5 slow sips of cool water, focusing on the sensation of the liquid moving down your throat. This calms vagal afferents. Avoid rapid gulping.
Scalp Massage for Interoceptive Grounding — Perform the scalp massage technique, focusing on the sensory input and pressure points. This action cues interoceptive awareness and helps to diffuse cranial tension. Scalp Massage for Interoceptive Grounding
Constructive Rest with Belly Breathing — Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat on the floor hip-width apart. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Breathe deeply into your belly, allowing your abdomen to rise with each inhalation for 2 minutes.
