Plyometrics/Strength & Conditioning · Originating from track and field conditioning, refined by coaches like Louie Simmons within strength and conditioning. · To improve lower limb power, tendon elasticity, and reduce ground contact time, translating to enhanced athletic performance and injury resilience. · Begin with 3 sets of 5-8 repetitions per leg. Focus on quality over quantity. Rest 60-90 seconds between sets. Gradually increase to 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions as technique improves.
Why it works
This movement utilizes the stretch-shortening cycle, where a rapid eccentric (lengthening) contraction is immediately followed by a powerful concentric (shortening) contraction. This trains the tendons and muscles to store and release elastic energy efficiently. The unilateral nature addresses muscular and fascial imbalances, while precise landing mechanics reinforce joint stability and proprioception, reducing injury risk by enhancing the nervous system's control over impact forces.
How to practice
Starting Position
- Stand tall on one leg, with a slight bend in the knee and the ankle dorsiflexed (toes pointing up slightly).
- Maintain a neutral spine and engage your core gently.
- Keep your gaze forward, hands on your hips or in an athletic ready position.
Execution
- Explode Upward: Drive through the ball of your foot, pushing vertically with minimal knee bend. Imagine pushing the ground away.
- Absorb & Rebound: As you land, absorb the impact smoothly through the ankle, knee, and hip, mimicking the initial slight bend. Immediately transition into the next jump, spending minimal time on the ground.
- Maintain Alignment: Ensure your knee tracks over your toes, avoiding any inward or outward collapse.
- Repetitions: Continue for the prescribed number of repetitions per leg.
