Pilates Chest Lift with Pelvic Floor Engagement
Integrate core breath and deep pelvic floor tone with a precise, controlled chest lift.
Integrate core breath and deep pelvic floor tone with a precise, controlled chest lift.
Classical Pilates (Joseph Pilates) · This movement is a foundational Pilates exercise, attributed to Joseph Pilates himself. It is a precursor to more advanced abdominal work and emphasizes core connection. · This practice addresses the felt state of a disconnected core, particularly a lack of integration between the breath, deep abdominal muscles, and pelvic floor. It cultivates a sense of internal support and stability. · Perform 8-12 repetitions per set, for 2-3 sets. Focus on slow, controlled movements rather than speed.
Why it works
The controlled flexion of the spine in the Chest Lift, when coordinated with breath and subtle pelvic floor activation, works by engaging the transversus abdominis and rectus abdominis. The exhalation cue facilitates the natural upward and inward lift of the pelvic floor, creating a synergistic contraction that stabilizes the lumbopelvic region. This neuromuscular re-patterning improves inter-muscular coordination and strengthens the deep core canister.
How to practice
Starting Position: Lie supine on your mat, knees bent, feet flat on the floor hip-width apart. Place hands gently behind your head, elbows wide.
Inhale: Prepare by inhaling to expand the rib cage laterally.
Exhale & Lift: As you slowly exhale, gently draw your navel towards your spine and lift your head, neck, and shoulders off the mat. Simultaneously, imagine gently kegeling or lifting the pelvic floor, as if preventing a bowel movement or stopping the flow of urine. Maintain space between your chin and chest.
Inhale & Hold: Briefly hold the lifted position at the peak of your exhale, maintaining the core and pelvic floor engagement.
Exhale & Lower: Slowly articulate your spine back down to the mat, releasing the pelvic floor engagement as you exhale. Control the descent through your abdominals, not by collapsing.
Repeat: Continue for the prescribed repetitions.
