It is not tied to a single ancient lineage but rather emerged from practical application in strength sports. · This practice addresses the need for enhanced shoulder girdle stability, thoracic spine extension, core bracing capacity, and grip endurance. It builds resilience against spinal compression and shear forces. · Perform 3-5 sets of 20-50 meters per side. Rest for 60-90 seconds between sets. Prioritize form over distance or weight. As proficiency increases, distance or weight can be incrementally increased.
Why it works
The Overhead Carry demands significant co-contraction of the shoulder stabilizers (rotator cuff, deltoids, scapular retractors/depressors) to maintain the load's position. The load overhead creates a long lever arm, amplifying the demand on the deep core musculature (transversus abdominis, obliques, quadratus lumborum) to resist spinal extension, lateral flexion, and rotation. This full-body tension, often referred to as "irradiation" or "stiffness," communicates stability throughout the kinetic chain, improving proprioception and reducing uncontrolled movement. The cyclical nature of walking under load further enhances these adaptations by repeatedly challenging balance and coordination while maintaining an isometric hold.
How to practice
Selection: Choose a kettlebell, dumbbell, or even a sandbag. Start with a lighter weight to master form, gradually increasing as stability improves.
Setup: Clean or press the weight overhead. The elbow should be fully locked, and the wrist stacked directly above the elbow, and the load directly above the shoulder joint. The ear, shoulder, hip, and ankle should form a relatively straight line when viewed from the side.
Posture: Actively pull the shoulder blade down and back without flaring the ribs. Maintain a tall, elongated spine. Resist the urge to hyperextend the lower back; brace the core as if anticipating a punch.
Grip: Crush the handle of the implement. This irradiates tension down the arm and into the shoulder, enhancing stability.
Gaze: Keep your gaze fixed forward, not down. This helps maintain neutral head and neck alignment.
Walk: Initiate controlled, deliberate steps. Avoid hurried or jerky movements. Maintain steady breathing throughout. The goal is to move smoothly and quietly, minimizing sway or instability.
