Why it works

The Crab Reach movement, foundational to Animal Flow by Mike Fitch, directly engages the oblique sling system and deep spinal rotators. This action facilitates a dynamic unwinding of fascial lines that often restrict thoracic mobility, specifically the thoracolumbar fascia and the spiral line. Neurologically, it stimulates the vestibular system through head movement and gaze shifts, recalibrating proprioceptive input and enhancing spatial awareness. The sequential articulation of the spine against gravity, combined with the overhead reach, gently encourages intervertebral separation, which signals safety to the nervous system and can reduce perceived stiffness. The controlled rotation also prompts parasympathetic activation by modulating respiratory mechanics and promoting a sense of expansive movement.

How to practice

  1. Start in Crab position. Sit on the floor, feet flat and hip-width apart, knees bent, hands behind you with fingers pointing towards your hips. Keep your chest open.

  2. Lift into Tabletop. Press through your hands and feet to lift your hips a few inches off the floor, creating a strong, stable base. Keep your neck long, eyes forward.

  3. Initiate the Reach. Shift your weight slightly onto your left hand and right foot. As you do, lift your right hand off the floor. Simultaneously, lift your hips higher, arcing your right arm overhead and towards the floor behind you, rotating your torso towards the ceiling.

  4. Extend and Gaze. Allow your chest to open fully towards the ceiling. Your gaze should follow your reaching hand. Feel a stretch through the right side of your body, from your fingertips down to your right hip. The movement should feel expansive, not forced.

  5. Return with Control. Slowly reverse the motion, bringing your right hand back to the floor as your hips lower slightly, returning to your elevated tabletop position. Maintain control throughout the entire movement.

  6. Repeat on the Other Side. Immediately transition to the left side, shifting weight to your right hand and left foot, lifting your left arm and rotating. This is one complete round.
