Chair Pose (Utkatasana) with Arm Variation

A dynamic standing pose to build warmth and cultivate grounded energy.

Yoga · Hatha Yoga, popularized by teachers like B.K.S. Iyengar for precision and engagement. · When feeling dispersed, ungrounded, or experiencing low physical energy. · 3-5 repetitions, holding each for 5-10 breaths. Perform once daily or when a sense of grounded activation is desired.

Why it works

Utkatasana engages large muscle groups in the lower body, increasing circulation and generating internal heat. The muscular effort and deep breathing stimulate the sympathetic nervous system in a controlled manner, followed by parasympathetic activation upon release. The challenge of sustaining the posture, combined with breath, builds interoceptive awareness and resilience. The arm variation further engages the upper body, promoting an integrated, full-body activation that can help consolidate scattered attention.

How to practice

  1. Starting Position: Stand with feet hip-width apart, parallel. Arms by your sides.

  2. Inhale: Sweep arms forward and up, parallel to each other, palms facing in.

  3. Exhale: Bend knees deeply, as if sitting into an imaginary chair. Ensure knees remain over ankles, not collapsing inward. Lower hips until thighs are as parallel to the floor as comfortable without strain. Keep the spine long, not rounded.

  4. Hold: Maintain the posture, breathing steadily. Focus on rooting through the feet and lifting through the crown of the head.

  5. With arms: For an added challenge, and to integrate the upper body, keep arms extended overhead, or bring palms to touch at the heart center.

  6. To Release: On an inhale, press through your feet to straighten legs, sweeping arms down to your sides. Exhale completely as you return to standing.
