Animal Flow · Developed within the Animal Flow system by Mike Fitch. · To improve segmental spinal control, integrate hip and shoulder movement, and facilitate a "flow state" through coordinated ground movement. · Perform 3-5 repetitions for 2-3 sets, focusing on smooth, continuous movement and breath synchronization. This can be integrated into a larger movement practice.
Why it works
This movement trains the nervous system to coordinate multiple body segments simultaneously, improving motor control and kinesthetic awareness. The spinal wave component mobilizes the vertebral column, while the dissociation of the hips and shoulders refines inter-limb coordination. This organized movement input can help down-regulate sympathetic nervous system activity by engaging proprioceptive pathways and promoting rhythmic breathing.
How to practice
Starting Position
Begin in a Beast position: hands directly under shoulders, knees directly under hips, hovering an inch or two above the ground. Maintain a neutral spine and active core engagement.
The Wave
- Initiate (Inhale): Keeping the hands and feet anchored, initiate a wave-like motion through the spine. Begin by tucking the tailbone, rounding the lower back, and then gradually articulating through the mid and upper back, allowing the head to drop last.
- Unload (Exhale): As the wave completes its upward travel, simultaneously push through the hands and feet to subtly lift the hips further, creating an extended and rounded posture. Imagine "unloading" tension from the spine.
Return to Beast (Inhale)
Reverse the movement, initiating from the hips. Extend the hips, then articulate the spine back to a neutral position, returning smoothly to the original Beast hold. Maintain controlled movement throughout.
