What the label is not telling you
- The serving is usually smaller than a standard whey scoop. Most clear whey sachets deliver 18–20g protein and roughly 2–2.2g leucine, which sits at the muscle-protein-synthesis threshold rather than above it. Standard isolate at 25–30g clears it comfortably for less money. If clear whey is your only protein feeding after training, use one and a half servings.
- pH is the under-discussed cost. Clear whey works because it is formulated acidic — typically pH 3.0–3.6, comparable to soft drinks. Citric and malic acid plus repeated sipping over an hour is a well-characterised enamel-erosion pattern in the dental literature (Lussi's work on erosive potential is the standard reference). Drink it in one go rather than sipping, rinse with water afterwards, and do not brush for 30 minutes.
- Hydrolysed isolate is the most expensive whey format and the speed advantage is nearly irrelevant. You are paying a hydrolysis premium plus a clarity-processing premium for a 15–30 minute absorption difference that almost no one's training schedule can use.

The reason clear whey matters at all is aversion, and aversion is a nervous-system phenomenon rather than a preference.
