The headlines are full of it: 'On Ozempic? You need to eat more protein.' This is presented as a helpful tip, a minor adjustment to your new, quieter life without 'food noise'. The advice to 'eat more protein' is a radical understatement. It is a non-negotiable demand from a body whose internal supply chain manager has just been drugged into silence.
It’s the week after a long weekend, and the brief calm is a distant memory. You’re on a GLP-1, and for the first time in years, you feel a sense of control around food. The scale is moving. But as you sit in your third meeting of the day, a different feeling settles in—a deep, cellular weariness that coffee won’t touch. You feel a specific kind of weakness: a physical unsubstantiality, distinct from sleepiness, like a book with half its pages torn out. You had a fruit smoothie for breakfast, thinking it was a healthy choice. You are learning, in real time, that your body’s accounting system for muscle and fat is entirely separate, and you have been accidentally defaulting on payments to the one that holds you upright.

You need to be thinking in the range of 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of your target body weight, daily. This higher amount is necessary to send a strong enough anabolic signal to counteract the catabolic drive of the calorie deficit and preserve your functional tissue.
Will I definitely lose muscle on semaglutide?
Significant muscle loss is the default outcome if you are passive about it. It is a high risk, not a certainty. You can mitigate most of it by treating the drug as one part of a larger strategy. Resistance training provides the signal for your body to build and maintain muscle. A high-protein diet provides the materials.
