The corporate wellness narrative sells your commute as 'you time'. A buffer to listen to a podcast, 'get your head in the game', or mentally prepare for the day. This is a convenient and expensive lie. Your commute functions as an invisible first shift you are required to work every single day, taxing your cognitive capacity before you’ve even opened your laptop.

It’s the Tuesday after a long weekend. You’re in the car, air conditioning blasting against the lingering summer heat, inching forward in traffic that feels personally hostile. You try to focus on a leadership podcast, but the words are just noise. Your attention is snagged by the car cutting into your lane, the sudden braking ahead, the low-level hum of vigilance. You arrive at the office, walk to your desk, and feel a familiar sense of exhaustion. You haven't done any 'work' yet, but your brain has already completed a 45-minute shift of threat assessment and micro-corrections. The day hasn't begun, but your capacity is already diminished.

Your brain processes traffic like a threat

Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) interprets modern life through an ancient, binary survival lens, constantly scanning the environment for signals of safety or danger. When you are driving in traffic, your brain is engaged in a high-stakes task of predicting the behaviour of dozens of other independent agents in a confined space. Every unexpected brake light, every car swerving without an indicator, is a micro-threat. Your nervous system responds accordingly, activating the sympathetic branch—the 'fight or flight' response.

This sympathetic activation manifests as a low, steady hum of vigilance. This state is a physical cascade. Your blood vessels constrict slightly, your breathing becomes shallower, and your focus narrows to threat detection. This is the body preparing for a physical confrontation that never arrives. While this mode is excellent for dodging a swerving car, it actively locks you out of the broad, creative, and open-ended thinking required for your actual job. It's a state of readiness that, when sustained, becomes a state of wear.

Think of your nervous system as a radio tuner. The sympathetic state is a high-volume AM station broadcasting static and emergency alerts. The parasympathetic state is the clear, quiet FM signal you want for focused work or rest. Traffic jams the dial on the AM station, flooding your system with the physiological equivalent of noise. Your heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of your nervous system's resilience, drops. Low HRV indicates that the system has lost its fluid, responsive quality—its ability to shift gears smoothly between alert and calm. You're stuck in drive, with the engine revving high even when you're standing still. The system does not know you are just on the M25 trying to get to a quarterly review; it knows only that the environment is unpredictable and requires constant monitoring. This cumulative wear from being chronically stuck in a low-grade alert state is called allostatic load. It is the slow, steady erosion of your capacity, like a coastline weathering a constant, grinding tide.

The illusion of the productive commute

The idea that you can layer another cognitive task—like taking a work call or learning a new language—on top of your commute is a fallacy born from productivity culture. It assumes the commute itself has no cost. This is like trying to have a detailed conversation while running a series of complex calculations in your head. You might do both, but you will do both badly, and at a significant energy expense.

Your brain’s capacity for executive function—planning, decision-making, and focus—is a finite resource, powered by a cellular energy currency called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The prefrontal cortex (PFC), the part of your brain responsible for your best thinking, is exceptionally greedy for ATP. When you force it to task-switch between navigating the road and processing a podcast, you are asking it to run two resource-intensive programs simultaneously. Every context switch—from the podcast host's point back to the sudden brake lights—forces a complete cognitive reset, flushing one set of information and loading another. This is among the most expensive operations the brain can perform. It’s like a chef trying to bake a cake and grill a steak on the same small countertop, constantly having to clear everything away to switch tasks. The result is two mediocre dishes and a lot of wasted energy.

The small decisions you make while driving—when to change lanes, how much to slow down, whether to trust another driver's signal—all siphon fuel from this finite daily tank. You arrive at your desk with the needle already hovering below 'full'. The year my own company nearly failed, my commute was the first thing I had to change. I had convinced myself my hour-long drive was my sacred time for strategic thinking. It was the hour I spent pre-exhausting my nervous system, ensuring I arrived at the office with less capacity to handle the day's actual fires. The change was simple: silence. No podcasts, no calls. It felt lazy for a week, and then I started arriving at the office with a quiet mind, ready for the first problem, not already defeated by it.

The commute as a sensory bottleneck

Beyond the cognitive load of planning and the social load of predicting others, your commute creates a massive sensory processing demand. Your visual system is actively tracking dozens of moving objects, calculating their trajectories, and filtering out irrelevant stimuli like billboards and pedestrians. This is called optic flow, and it’s computationally demanding. Simultaneously, your auditory system is filtering the drone of the engine and the road noise from important signals like sirens or another car's horn. Your vestibular and proprioceptive systems are constantly processing the micro-vibrations of the road and the subtle shifts in momentum as you accelerate and brake.

All this sensory data flows into the brain, creating a bottleneck. The brain has finite bandwidth to process incoming information. When that bandwidth is saturated with the raw data of navigating a complex environment, there is very little left over for internal monologue, creative thought, or strategic planning. This is why you can drive for ten minutes and have no memory of the road you just covered. Your brain was fully occupied; it was so consumed with the primary task of navigating that it pruned away the resources needed to form a narrative memory of the event. The mental space you hoped to use for reflection was instead allocated to pure sensory-motor processing. The 'zone' you get into while driving is a state of sensory overload where the brain has deliberately shut down this non-essential processing to cope with the flood of input.

The social cost of other drivers

Your commute feels draining because it is a profoundly dysfunctional social event. Your brain is tasked with tracking unpredictable human agents, a far more complex job than simply tracking objects in space. Every other car contains a mind you cannot see.

This process, called Theory of Mind, is one of your brain's most sophisticated and energy-intensive functions. It’s typically used in face-to-face conversation to read subtle cues. In traffic, you are forced to run this complex software with almost no reliable data—just the crude movements of a two-tonne metal box. The constant, low-grade guessing game ("Will that driver merge? Did they see me? Are they distracted by their phone? Are they aggressive or hesitant?") creates a unique form of social friction. It’s an interaction with high stakes but no possibility of repair, clarification, or connection. You are left marinating in the ambient stress of hundreds of anonymous, unpredictable actors, which explains why you might arrive at the office already feeling impatient and defensive, with your capacity for nuanced human interaction significantly reduced.

Common Questions

But my commute helps me decompress. Is that wrong?

That feeling is a useful signal. It’s worth asking what you’re decompressing from, and what you’re preparing for. If you're using the commute to create a buffer from a stressful home environment, that’s a useful piece of data about that environment. If you mean you're switching into 'work mode', recognise that this state change has a physiological cost. You are deliberately priming your sympathetic nervous system for the demands of the day. Using a high-stress environment like traffic to do this is like using a blowtorch to light a candle. It gets the job done, but with a lot of unnecessary collateral heat and fuel expenditure.

Is taking public transport any better?

It can be, as it removes the specific cognitive and social load of driving. You are no longer personally responsible for navigating the vehicle. However, it often introduces other stressors: crowding, unpredictable delays, loud noises, and a lack of personal space. Your nervous system is still processing a high volume of sensory and social input. Your brain has to work to filter out conversations, announcements, and the sheer visual chaos of a packed train car. This is less of a threat-detection load and more of a sensory-filtering load, which also taxes the prefrontal cortex. The primary variable is your sense of control and safety, not the mode of transport.

I can't change my commute, so what's the point of this?

The point is to correctly account for the commute's cost. Once you see the price tag, you can budget for it. Stop treating your first hour at the office as hour one; treat it as hour two. Build in a 15-minute buffer on arrival to let your system down-regulate before you demand high-level focus from it. Acknowledging the load is the first step to managing it. When you get to your desk, before opening your email, take three minutes to look out a window at something distant, like a tree or a cloud. This allows your visual system to relax from the hyper-focus of the road and signals to your nervous system that the high-alert phase is over.
