Calm post-screen overstimulation with a simple sequence targeting auditory processing and visual fatigue.
POST-SCREEN-BINGE OVERSTIM · after prolonged screen time · 15 minutes
Why it works
Prolonged screen exposure can overstimulate the visual and auditory systems, leading to heightened sympathetic nervous system activity. This routine targets specific sensory inputs, reducing the cognitive load associated with visual fatigue and excessive auditory processing. By shifting focus to internal sounds and soft peripheral vision, it downregulates arousal and promotes a more relaxed state. The jaw and neck release further mitigates tension often accumulated during focused screen work, supporting parasympathetic activation.
Jaw and Neck Release — Gently massage your jaw muscles (masseters) with your fingertips in small circles for one minute. Then, slowly roll your head side to side, feeling the stretch in your neck and scalenes. Do this for two minutes, breathing deeply.
Auditory Grounding — Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Focus on the most distant sound you can hear, then gradually bring your attention to closer sounds, and finally to the sounds within your own body. Remain here for three minutes, allowing your auditory field to expand and contract naturally.
Soft Periphery Eases Focused Attention — Shift your visual focus to include your peripheral vision. Expand your awareness to the edges of your visual field without actively trying to see them. This technique, explained in Soft Periphery Eases Focused Attention, can reduce visual strain and promote a more relaxed state.
Hydrating Micro-Dose — Drink a small glass of water (4-6 oz) with a pinch of sea salt or an electrolyte tab. This micro-intake supports cellular hydration, crucial for nervous system function after sustained cognitive output.
Supported Recline — Lie supine on a flat surface, ideally with your legs elevated on a pillow or chair. Place a small, rolled towel under your neck for support. Rest here for four minutes, focusing on the gentle rise and fall of your abdomen with each breath.
