Why it works

Following intense physical exertion, the sympathetic nervous system often remains elevated. This routine leverages the baroreflex by promoting gentle pressure changes and integrates somatic release to manually signal safety and reduce muscle tension. This downregulates the HPA axis, facilitating a parasympathetic shift, thereby optimizing recovery and preventing lingering physiological arousal that can hinder rest and digestion.

  1. Jaw and temple release — Using two fingers, gently massage the masseter muscles where your jaw hinges. Move in small circular motions, then sweep along the temples. Perform for 2 minutes, breathing slowly.

  2. Supine leg-supported respiration — Lie on your back with calves resting on a chair or the edge of a sofa, hips and knees at 90 degrees. Place one hand on your chest and one on your abdomen. Inhale slowly for 4 counts, feel your abdomen rise, and exhale for 6 counts. Continue for 5 minutes.

  3. Hydrate and replete — Slowly drink 8-12 ounces of filtered water with a pinch of electrolyte-rich sea salt or a small protein-rich snack. Focus on the sensation of hydration and replenishment.

  5. Gentle spinal articulation — From your supine position, slowly roll to one side and gently press yourself up. Stand tall, soften your knees, and perform slow, controlled spinal rolls, segment by segment, from neck to low back. Repeat 3-5 times.
