For years, my job in corporate strategy was to take a hundred pages of dense market reporting and turn it into a single, brutally efficient slide for a CEO who had sixty seconds to care. So when the AI summary tools arrived, I was ready to celebrate. I thought it was the end of grunt work. I'm not celebrating anymore. The promise was that it would clear out cognitive clutter to make room for big, important ideas. But that’s not what’s happening.

You feel it, too. It’s the strange hollowness after you’ve had a “productive” morning clearing your inbox with AI-drafted replies. You look at the perfectly composed emails sent in your name and have the same emotional connection to them as you would a microwave instruction manual. It’s the brain fog that descends after you’ve “read” five articles by just reading their AI summaries. You know the conclusions, but you couldn't argue a single point from memory if your life depended on it. This is the new flavour of tired but wired: your task list is shorter, but your brain feels strangely empty, buzzing with a low-grade anxiety because it senses it hasn’t actually done the work. For years, I believed my ability to synthesize huge amounts of information was an innate talent. It wasn't. It was a skill I built, report by painful report, slide by painful slide. When you consistently hand that work over to a machine, you are sending a clear signal to your brain: the neural circuits for deep reading, synthesis, and critical analysis are no longer high-priority infrastructure. The brain, being a good manager, begins to decommission them.

The result isn’t just that you get worse at that specific task. The fog leaks into everything. The attention-regulation networks that you strengthen by focusing on a hard problem are the same ones you need to be present with your family. The mental effort of wrestling with a concept is what moves it into long-term memory. Outsource the effort, and you get a brain that struggles to focus and remembers almost nothing.

A clear desk is not a clear mind. A clear mind is a mind that has wrestled with the mess.

The Empty Filing Cabinet

Let’s get specific. The process of forming a durable memory isn’t like saving a file to a hard drive. It’s an active, effortful biological process, managed largely by a seahorse-shaped structure in your brain called the hippocampus. For the hippocampus to flag something as “important, keep this,” it needs signals of effort. Did you pay close attention? Did you struggle with it? The AI did the work. It read the document, identified the patterns, and organized the information. Your brain just passively received the output. This is the empty filing cabinet. The information is in your head, technically. You can look it up. But you don't know it in a way that allows you to use it, innovate on it, or connect it to the next idea. The promise of making space for “big ideas” falls apart, because big ideas aren’t born in a vacuum. They are born from the messy, unpredictable collision of things you deeply understand.

It is a quiet, creeping de-skilling of the modern worker.

The New Definition of Load

The irony is that these tools don't even reduce your cognitive load. They just change its flavour.

Instead of the load of deep work, you now have the load of endless supervision. You have to check the AI’s work for hallucinations, for tone, for factual errors. You are burdened with a constant, low-level vigilance. This state of partial attention is a direct route to an overloaded HPA axis—the stress-hormone control loop that governs your fight-or-flight response. It creates a state of chronic, low-grade static in your nervous system, the kind that kills sleep and leaves you feeling exhausted but unable to rest.
