For years, I told people the exhaustion after a festival like Navratri was just 'social jetlag' and to power through it. I was wrong. The profound fatigue is not a sleep debt problem to be solved with an extra lie-in. Your entire physiological tempo has been re-written, and your body's internal clock is now playing the wrong song at the wrong time.
It’s the Tuesday after the last night of Garba. The house is quiet, but there’s a high-frequency buzz behind your eyes that extra-strong coffee won't touch. You made it through the school run on fumes, but now, staring at your inbox, the words blur. You feel hollowed out, irritable, and strangely alert. Cortisol, the hormone of alertness and action, is meant to be the lead instrument. It should peak within an hour of you waking up, your body’s natural 'get up and go' signal that turns on your brain and gets your muscles ready for the day. From there, it should gradually decline, reaching its lowest point in the evening to allow the symphony to quiet down for sleep.
For nine days, you systematically taught your orchestra a new score. The late nights, bright lights, loud music, and social excitement acted as powerful time-givers, telling your SCN that the day now starts at 10pm. Your body, ever adaptable, learned to anticipate this. It started pushing its cortisol peak into the evening to give you the energy to dance. The result is an inverted curve: low, flat cortisol in the morning when you need to feel awake, and a lingering high in the evening when you need to wind down. That 'tired but wired' feeling is the signature of a mistimed hormonal rhythm.

Your blood sugar is on a ghost train
The other part of this story is blood sugar. The nine nights of dancing were likely fuelled by nine nights of festival foods, often eaten late. Many traditional fasting foods are heavy on carbohydrates and sugar, which send your blood glucose soaring. Your body releases insulin to manage this, but its response is sluggish late at night when it expects to be resting. This leads to a dramatic overcorrection. Your blood sugar crashes a few hours later, jolting you awake around 3am with a surge of adrenaline and cortisol as your body scrambles to stabilise itself.
This nightly rollercoaster leaves your system depleted. You wake up feeling groggy and unrested, with an undercurrent of anxiety from the nocturnal stress response. You might also notice intense cravings for more sugar or caffeine the next day as your body tries to find a quick energy source. This creates a vicious cycle of unstable energy, poor sleep, and heightened stress, even after the festivities have ended. The feeling of being 'off' is a direct readout of this metabolic disruption.

How long until I feel normal again?
It takes about three to seven days to fully reset your rhythm if you are deliberate about it. Consistency is more important than intensity. Each day you follow a corrective protocol, you pull your internal clock back towards its natural setting.
Should I just sleep in to catch up?
No. Sleeping in late pushes your morning light exposure even later, confusing your master clock further. It's better to get up at a consistent, reasonable time, get immediate sunlight, and take a short nap in the early afternoon if you need it.
Is fasting during Navratri making this worse?
It depends on how you fast. The problem is not the fasting itself, but the common reliance on high-carbohydrate, high-sugar 'fasting-friendly' foods. This drives the blood sugar rollercoaster. Focusing on protein, healthy fats, and fibre, even within fasting rules, stabilises your energy.
